Anyone 18 years of age or older must obtain an adult learner’s permit (ALP) before obtaining a driver's license.  An ALP is valid for two years. Click here to schedule an appointment for your ALP.

 

The ALP must be held for at least 90 days before taking the road  test. There are certain individuals exempt from this 90-day requirement. They are as follows:

• Active duty military - stationed out-of-state (must provide orders and military ID card).

• Any teen permit holder that held a Learner Permit for more than 90 days that expired on their 18th birthday and now is applying for an adult Learner Permit.

• Any person that held a driver's license in the past.  This includes individuals who have held an out-of-state driver's license, US territory or out-of-country license. 

 

8 Hour Safe Driving Course

Before taking the road test, you are required to take an 8-hour Safe Driving Practices Course. 

 

If you previously had a Connecticut Driver's License and it has expired you are not required to take the 8-hour Safe Driving Practices Course. 

 

The 8 hour class is offered every Saturday either Online or in person

 

Class is every Saturday from 10-6:30pm

Behind-the-wheel Practice 

​

• Anyone 18 years of age or older must hold a learner’s permit  for at least 90 days before taking the road test unless you fall under the exemptions listed above.  

​

• When driving, the permit holder must be accompanied by a commercial driving instructor or a qualified trainer.  A qualified trainer is  an individual who is at least 20 years of age  who has held a valid license for at least four consecutive years with no suspensions.
